Thinking about adding a fire feature to your property? With the cooler temperatures of autumn rolling into Minnesota, sitting near a warm fire becomes a comforting option on chilly fall nights. Who doesn’t love the feeling of heat and light that a fire provides? Fire features are a popular way for homeowners to add an extra element of fun and warmth to entertaining. In this post, we discuss the differences between fire pits and fireplaces, common rules for their construction, and design ideas!

Fire Pits vs. Fireplaces

  • Fire pits are often less expensive to install and construct than fireplaces.
  • It’s possible to fit more guests around an open fire pit than a fireplace.
  • Fire pits take up less height and do not block views of surrounding landscaping.

  • Fireplaces add a sense of architectural grandness to a design, they are large and visually impressive.
  • They act as a barrier to wind, and provide extra privacy.
  • Fireplaces take up less open space than fire pits and can be installed on the edge of a design as pictured above.

Common rules in Minnesota

Generally speaking, all recreational fires must be at least 25 feet away from combustible materials, meaning woods, plastics, etc. This means that fire features must be constructed at least 25 feet away from the foundation of a home. Depending on the city, there may be more restrictions. Portable fire pits can be a solution if it’s too difficult to construct a permanent feature with these limitations. More details on  fire codes can be viewed on this document from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Design Ideas

Fire features are an attractive design element to add to any landscaping project. Walls surrounding a fire create a cozy and inviting space. Looking for something more modern? Rectangular fire pits create sharp lines with a contemporary clean look. Fire features are also great extensions of outdoor living spaces such as kitchens, dining areas, or pools.

The goal of good design is to create an outdoor area that is not only beautiful, but functional to the owners lifestyle. At Simons Landscaping, we consider the best place for a fire feature based on accessibility, building codes, aesthetics, and lifestyle.
